CBID Meets Laerdal

Mon Aug 3, 2015

After snoozing all of our lets-wake-up-at-5am-for-sunset alarms, the DoBA team trudged downstairs at 7:15 a.m. for breakfast. Unsure about what would be considered appropriate work clothes at Laerdal, we all came down in our best clothes, hoping to impress. All except for Teja, who seemed to be wearing the same clothes as yesterday, except maybe a new pair of jeans :P. We walked into the café imagining we'd grab a quick toast and some orange juice and start discussing our plans and preparations for the day. Instead, we were welcomed by what seemed to be a never-ending Norwegian buffet! Our eyes gleamed at the sight of the smorgasbord of food that consisted of cheeses upon cheeses, breads upon breads and salmon upon salmon. We took helpings of olives, roasted potatoes, pancakes, slices of fresh, ripe fruit - anything and everything we could get our hands on until our plates could fit no more. Before we sat down, we grabbed ourselves some fresh, hot coffee, knowing full well we will need the energy and alertness to get us through the day. As we ate, we discussed and shared our expectations for Laerdal until Jenny had arrived to pick us up and take us to Laerdal. We had been warned of the rainy and cold Stavanger weather, but were pleasantly surprised by blue skies up above. It was a very refreshing 10 minute walk to Laerdal headquarters, where upon reaching, we signed in and struggled our huffing and puffing selves to the top of the spiral stair case, where Laerdal *Global Health* was situated.

At Laerdal we got a chance to meet the team - Tor Inge, Cansu, Carolyn, Olav, Frode and Helge, to name a few - all were superbly kind to us and made us feel more than welcome. Tore gave us an overview of the history of Laerdal and its mission, along with an overview of the Day of Birth Alliance that we will be a part of. After that, we were given a chance to introduce ourselves, not only to the LGH team in Stavanger, but also the LGH team in India.

As part of an intro to LGH and its partnerships, we were given a tour of SAFER. There we met with Kjetil, who showed us the state-of-the-art mannequins that exist as training tools. We all watched with our eyes wide as the life-like training tool blinked and its chest heaved up and down at every breath.

In the afternoon, we were given a short presentation by Michael Sautter, who showed us the importance of standardization and a student-led learning environment. We performed an exercise where four of us were given a piece of paper and asked to create an airplane, which we threw to see which flew the farthest distance. Since Ramji's flew the farthest, he was asked to teach us how to build his plane. We all threw a second time, this time with Ramji's design. Then since getting the farthest difference was about design AND technique, Ramji was asked to explain his throwing technique to us. We all threw our Ramji-designed plane for a third time. Each consecutive time we threw, the sum of our distances increased.Suffice to say, we were quite impressed by how effectively he conveyed his message...

In the evening, we were given a brief overview by Jenny and Cansu of some of the training programs that Laerdal is working on, more specifically Helping Babies Breathe and Helping Babies Survive.

We ended the day at Laerdal with Jenny showing us the museum that portrayed some of Laerdal's history, including the sculpture of the woman who drowned (which we all realized is something that exists in our very own design studio at Hopkins!), the original Anne dolls and some of the older devices and mannequins used for resuscitation.

That evening we had dinner with Cansu, Tor Inge and Jenny on the rooftop of Comfort Square Hotel. The view was breath-taking and the food was all around fantastic, especially the garlic roasted corn ~

Some people sat on the wrong side of the table... :X
After dinner, we walked around Breiavatnet Lake for a bit and became subjects of Ramji's glorious photography.

Most of the pictures of Ramji on our phones look like this...

C'mon, Teja!

After exploring quaint Stavanger some more with its small, cute houses with flowers and cobblestone pathways, we came home exhausted and ready to flop into bed!
